AFSA Committees

Administration & Knowledge Management

Administration & Knowledge Management is responsible for managing key information related to AFSA events. Members of Admin & KM are expected to work with a team to create and administer surveys, attend team meetings, interpret survey responses, and write reports based on survey results.

“Before applying, I had the chance to meet some of the members of Admin. I could sense that there was a strong connection between the committee and the members I met were hilarious. In addition, my communication and organizational skills were well suited to my future responsibilities.”

- Devena, 2A member of Admin

Finance

Finance is responsible for the finances of the organization and ensures pre-approved funds are distributed in a timely, effective, and accountable process. Members of Finance work together to create the AFSA budget, provide financial updates, handle cheque requests and process approvals.

“My experience with AFSA was really good even though everything is online. The committee I'm in is very friendly and warm. Since everything's online, we do have less meetings but whenever we interact I have great fun. AFSA provides a great online community and it is also a great opportunity to learn and improve on key skills.”

- Ian, 2A member of Finance

External Relations

External Relations is responsible for planning initiatives to help raise funds and awareness for charitable organizations, as well as establishing relationships with external institutions to gain sponsorships for various AFSA events. Members of External plan and execute initiatives to help support those in need, hosting events that raise money for charity.

“I was drawn to the External committee because of the opportunity to host events that raise money for charity. I got the opportunity to make great friends that helped make my first year an enjoyable experience. I would recommend joining AFSA because of the great opportunities to develop your communication and collaboration skills by meeting new people.”

- Ryan, 2A member of External Relations

Education

Education is responsible for providing SAF students with additional academic support and resources. Members of Education work hard throughout the term to create over 10 study packages for their classes. Additionally, Education organizes and launches various study sessions.

“I wanted to make an impact on my classmates' educational experience — doing my part in bridging the gap between students and accessible educational resources that they could access. I've had the pleasure of getting to know some of the smartest, wittiest, and supportive people — and being able to lean on one another throughout the ups-and-downs of first-year, while watching each other grow, has easily been the highlight of my first year at Waterloo.”

- Vivian, 2A member of Education

Internal Events

Internal Events is responsible for planning all social events that service SAF students. Members of Internal Events work together to organize and host engaging events for SAF students such as games night, weekly trivia, and AFSA’s virtual talent show.

“I loved being a part of AFSA this year as I learned a lot about how clubs at UWaterloo operate and I made lots of new friends which I am thankful for in a virtual environment! It’s a great way to get out of your comfort zone and be an important part of the university experiences of all SAF students.”

- Sairamya, 2A member of Internal Events

Marketing

Marketing is responsible for maintaining the public image of AFSA by means of promotional material and announcements, the AFSA website, and social media channels. Members of Marketing advertise AFSA events and services by creating informative graphics and posters, and manage AFSA’s social media presence.

“Being a part of AFSA was a great learning experience. Looking back at the posters that I have created throughout the year, I believe that I have improved a bit in graphic design compared to when I first started. This was all thanks to the Marketing VP as she always gave me feedback whenever I sent her my work. Furthermore, I was able to meet a lot of nice people in this club, and I even became friends with a member in the branding team.”

- Jacqueline, 2A member of Marketing

Internal Services

Internal Services is responsible for running professional and career development services. Members of Internal Services plan and run resumé critiques, interview workshops, the e-Mentorship program and the annual Tax Clinic where student volunteers help file free income taxes for the local community.

“[I was drawn to] the growth-oriented workshops and events that Internal Services organizes for students within the SAF community. Through these workshops students are able to learn new skills and connect with experienced upper years offering them more support throughout their educational and professional journey. AFSA allows you to build your leadership profile, and make several new connections which are both factors that can allow you to have a smooth and supportive university experience. I was also able to strengthen my project management skills and learn the different ways in which online events can be successful.”

- Paromita, 2A member of Internal Services
