Position you are running for: VP External
What do you believe are the main concerns for students in SAF right now? How would you like to approach fixing them?
The main concern I believe students in SAF are currently facing is an environment of competitiveness. Just from my first year alone, I felt the negative impact this competitive spirit can have on the livelihood of students. I believe that too many students compare themselves with other people and are often too hard on themselves. As such, they get overly stressed when they see others succeed and do things they often shouldn't do, in order to help strive for their own personal success. I personally believe that the root of this competitiveness truly starts off in first year, continuing throughout the program. Therefore, my solution for fixing this issue is to have a speaker series with first years about this issue and have a panel of upper year students give their own thoughts and experiences on this topic. I feel in doing so, first years will be able to combat the competitive spirit in the SAF programs, and overall become a closer community.
Why are you running for this position? (experience, background & motivation)
Personally, I am running for VP External for several reasons. To begin, as a member of the Corporate Relations committee, I believe that both AFSA External and Corporate Relations unnecessarily diversified their committee objectives this year. For example, Corporate Relations held an event called "Real Talks", which I believe was an effective and useful event, but I felt it was more suited for Internal Services. As a result of taking on a wide range of roles, these two committees struggled to achieve their core objectives. As such, I am running for VP External to help bring a focus for the committee. This being that AFSA External should narrow their focus on raising money for countless charities, as well as attaining sponsorship for large AFSA events, such as Tax Clinic. In doing so, it will incorporate the best of both worlds from both the External and Corporate Relations committees.
